Governor Dapo Abiodun, CON, has officially launched the comprehensive reconstruction of the Abeokuta-Ifo-Sango-Abule Egba Highway, a critical infrastructure project set to revamp one of the busiest roadways in Nigeria.
The highway, spanning a total length of 69.2 kilometers, boasts a dual carriage width of 10.5 meters and traverses five local government areas in both Ogun and Lagos states: Abeokuta North LGA, Ewekoro LGA, Ifo LGA, Ado-Odo/Ota LGA in Ogun State, and Alimosho LGA in Lagos State.
To expedite the reconstruction process, five construction units have been deployed to work concurrently across different zones. These units are responsible for specific sections of the road, which include OTA/IFO, PAPALANTO, EWEKORO/ITORI, and ABEOKUTA, each covering approximately 15 kilometers.
A fifth unit will be dedicated to palliative works and ensuring smooth traffic flow throughout the project’s duration.
The reconstruction project, awarded to CRANEBURG Construction Company, is expected to be completed in 18 months, having commenced two weeks ago.
The Abeokuta-Otta-Abule Egba highway is not only the second busiest expressway in Southwest Nigeria but also a vital artery connecting several industrial hubs, including the Lafarge Cement Factory and various markets.
The road’s reconstruction is crucial for numerous reasons. It serves as a major connecting route from the industrial areas of Ado-Odo Otta and Agbara to Lagos and other parts of Nigeria, facilitating the movement of goods and services.
The communities along this corridor are densely populated, and the road’s strategic location significantly impacts trade and economic activities in Ogun State and beyond.
The scope of the reconstruction project is extensive, covering site clearance, earthworks, drainage, culverts, sidewalks, median barriers, pavement and surfacing, road markings, traffic signs, laybacks, and landscaping, among other features designed to meet world-class standards.
Upon completion, the newly reconstructed road is expected to enhance security along the busy axis, create employment opportunities for both skilled and unskilled laborers, reduce vehicle maintenance costs, and improve the overall quality of life for residents in the area.
The project marks a significant step towards alleviating long-standing infrastructure challenges in Ogun State and is set to bolster the region’s economic prospects.
