UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak conceded defeat to Labour leader Keir Starmer

Labour has achieved a decisive victory in the UK general election, positioning Keir Starmer as the incoming prime minister.

Labour is anticipated to secure 410 seats, with the Conservatives at 144, as final results are expected on Friday.

While the UK’s national election results were still being counted, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak conceded defeat to Labour leader Keir Starmer on Friday morning.

Sunak conceded shortly after retaining his House of Commons seat, acknowledging that it had been a “challenging night” for his Conservative Party, whose 14-year governance was being overturned by Labour’s triumph.

“The Labour Party has won this general election, and I’ve called Sir Keir Starmer to congratulate him on his victory,” Sunak stated in an early Friday broadcast.

The outgoing British PM apologized and took responsibility for his party’s defeat, assuring a peaceful transition of power from the Conservatives to Labour.

“Today, power will change hands in a peaceful and orderly manner, with goodwill on all sides. That is something that should give us all confidence in our country’s stability and future,” added Sunak, who became prime minister in 2022.
