Kano Emirate Crisis: Government Acknowledges Receipt of Court Order

The Kano State Government on Monday confirmed receiving an order from the Federal High Court halting the implementation of the new emirate council law.

The state’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Haruna Dederi, acknowledged the receipt of the court order on Monday.

PREMIUM TIMES reported that the state House of Assembly passed a bill on Thursday dissolving the five emirates established by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

Governor Abba Yusuf signed the law the next day, abolishing the emirates of Gaya, Karaye, Rano, and Bichi, and reinstating Lamido Sanusi as the emir of Kano, who was dethroned in March 2020.

However, dethroned Emir Aminu Ado Bayero of Kano rejected his removal, citing the federal court’s order.

Aminu Dan’agundi, a title holder in the Kano Emirate, challenged the dissolution of the emirates and the reinstatement of Mr. Sanusi in court.

Haruna Dederi told BBC Hausa service that the government is reviewing the court order received Monday morning.

“This court injunction has generated controversy until this morning at about 10 a.m. We received it from an official of the Federal High Court.

“We received the court order, let’s wait for our response and court pronouncement,” he said.

Meanwhile, tension rises in the state as dethroned Emir Ado-Bayero and reinstated Emir Sanusi hold court in different palaces. Residents of Gaya, Bichi, Rano, and Karaye have also been holding peaceful protests against the development.
