The Kano State House of Assembly, Thursday, dissolved all four newly created emirates established by the immediate past administration of Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
The dissolution followed deliberations on the House floor during Thursday’s plenary.
The Kano State Emirates Council Amendment Bill was considered after scaling its second and third readings on Thursday morning.
With the amendment, two siblings of the Beyero dynasty, Aminu Ado Bayero, and Nasiru Ado Bayero, lost their crowns.
Other first-class monarchs affected are Aliyu Ibrahim Abdulkadir, Kabiru Muhammad Inuwa, and Ibrahim Abubakar II of Gaya, Rano, and Karaye emirates.
Previously, the law creating five new emirates was first assented to by ex-Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje on December 5, 2019.
Dr. Ganduje further assented to an amendment on October 14, 2020, and signed another on April 11, 2023.
Section 3(1) of the law established five distinct emirates: Kano, Bichi, Rano, Gaya, and Karaye, with Kano and Karaye each having eight local government areas, while Bichi and Gaya share nine local government areas each. Rano Emirate has jurisdiction over 10 local government areas out of the 44 local councils in the state.
Earlier, Deputy Speaker Muhammad Butu explained that repealing the law would restore Kano’s lost glory, as dividing the Kano emirate into five reduced the state’s national capacity and dignity.
The Majority Leader, Alhaji Lawan Dala, said the emirate council served as a cultural custodian, which was disrupted by the creation of the additional four emirates.
With the amendment, all four new emirate councils were abolished, leaving only the Kano Emirate.
The House also adopted a motion to create a new second-class emirate council in the state.
This move could facilitate the return of the deposed Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II.
In January 2024, former Kano governor and leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Sen. Rabi’u Kwankwaso, stated that the issue of Kano emirates would be revisited.
Former Ganduje had split the Kano emirate into five and dethroned then-Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II.
Following the New Nigerian Peoples Party’s victory in last year’s election, Kwankwaso said the government of Abba Kabir Yusuf would review the dethronement and division of the emirate.
“Honestly, the Kano Emirates issue is one of the things that nobody has sat with me to discuss so far, but I am sure we will sit and decide how to proceed. Will it be allowed, demolished, corrected, or otherwise? It will be revisited, and what’s necessary will be done.
“There were many things, and this was a trap. These actions were not done with good intentions, which everyone here and our listeners are aware of.
“Sometimes you bring good things that turn out bad, and sometimes you bring bad things that turn out good. All I know is that I was not consulted yet, but we will definitely discuss and decide what should be done.”
