Lagos PDP Commends Abia’s Revocation of Pension for Ex-Governors and Deputies

The recent move by the Abia State Government to revoke pensions for former governors and deputies has sparked discussions nationwide.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State has lauded the Abia House of Assembly and Governor Alex Otti for their decision, describing it as a commendable step in the right direction.

Philip Aivoji, the chairperson of PDP in Lagos State, expressed his approval of the move in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos on Monday. He urged the Lagos State Government to follow Abia’s lead for the benefit of the state.

The Abia Assembly passed a bill on Tuesday to halt the payment of pensions to former governors and their deputies in the state. Governor Otti subsequently signed the bill into law on Thursday, stating that it was part of the administration’s commitment to promoting good governance in the state.

In his reaction, Mr. Aivoji emphasized that while some states have taken steps to repeal laws providing pensions for former governors and deputies, many others have remained indifferent.

He stated, “In my opinion, having served before, it wasn’t like that: After serving the people for a certain period, you shouldn’t continue to enjoy the perks of the office. Providing pensions for former governors and deputies is inappropriate, especially during times of economic hardship.”

He further praised Abia’s decision to repeal the law, expressing his support for it and urging other state assemblies, including Lagos, to do the same.

Mr. Aivoji commended Governor Otti for endorsing the bill, emphasizing that only state governments that prioritize the welfare of the people would take such decisive actions.

He believed that if other states followed Abia’s lead, the cost of governance would decrease, allowing for more funds to be allocated to citizens’ welfare and infrastructure development.

Mr. Aivoji concluded by stating that former governors and deputies should no longer receive pension benefits after their tenure expires.

The House Committee on Establishment, Training, and Pension, in the amendment bill on the state Pension Law for former governors and other political office holders, recommended a 50 per cent reduction in their benefits and emoluments.
