NLC Confronts Abure, Asserts Ownership of Labour Party

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has described Julius Abure, the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), as a “struggling aspiring politician.”

The NLC stated that Abure has lost significant support from key party members, emphasizing that the Labour Party operates under the NLC’s authority. The commission reiterated that Abure’s actions have defied a court ruling regarding the party’s ownership.

This information was conveyed in a statement signed by Comrade Titus Amba, Chairperson, NLC Political Commission, and Comrade Chris Uyot, Secretary, NLC Political Commission.

The statement reads: “Mr. Abure’s attempts to evade the issues raised in our previous press release, demanding his resignation for organizing a National Convention without sole ownership rights, must be addressed. The Nigeria Labour Congress remains the custodian of the Labour Party, as affirmed by legal judgments and historical precedent.”

The NLC reminded Abure of a court ruling from March 20, 2018, which declared the Labour Party as NLC’s property and mandated an all-inclusive National Convention to rectify previous mismanagement.

The NLC emphasized the need for Abure’s resignation and the establishment of a caretaker committee to organize a legitimate and inclusive national convention.

The statement comes following allegations by the LP’s National Working Committee against Joe Ajaero, President of the NLC, accusing him of attempting to replace Abure.

Abure and the NWC were accused of planning a ‘secret’ convention without stakeholder input, aiming to re-elect Abure as the sole administrator.

The NLC’s political wing called for Abure’s immediate resignation and the constitution of a caretaker transition committee to organize a lawful and inclusive convention.

Abure responded, criticizing the NLC’s actions and accusing them of interference in party affairs. He highlighted previous efforts to reconcile with the NLC and lamented the current president’s disruptive influence on party relations.
