Former Bauchi State Governor, Isa Yuguda, disclosed in an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today that the federal government continues to pay subsidies on petroleum products, contradicting President Bola Tinubu’s earlier announcement of its removal.
President Tinubu had declared the end of fuel subsidy in his inaugural speech, emphasizing that the 2023 Budget did not allocate funds for it, deeming subsidy payments unjustifiable. However, Yuguda’s statement suggests otherwise, indicating ongoing subsidy payments.
Yuguda clarified that while subsidies were removed from private pockets, they persist in channels where they shouldn’t, leading to increased revenue directed to the nation’s treasury. He highlighted instances where subsidies are paid for imaginary pipelines, contributing to economic complexities.
Addressing the economic challenges faced by Nigerians, Yuguda stressed the need for the president’s cabinet to effectively communicate government policies to the populace, elucidating how these measures will positively impact the nation. He attributed part of the economic woes to mismanagement by previous administrations, underscoring the importance of informed communication to navigate the nation through its current predicament.
