In celebration of World Earth Day 2025, The Nigerian Environmental Society, Abeokuta chapter, Ogun State has urged the residents of the state to join the state government to campaign against indiscriminate waste disposal and open defecation.

The body also advised them to cultivate the habit of disposing waste properly adding that it will help them to have a better living standard.
The Special Assistant to Governor Dapo Abiodun on youth development and who is also a member of the association, Comrade Olamide Lawal disclosed this on Tuesday in Omida Market, Abeokuta during a sensitization talk organized for the market women as to mark this year World Earth Day.
Earth day is an annual event hold every 22 of April to demonstrate support for environmental protection.
He called on the market women to take action by prioritizing environmental cleanliness in their daily lives.
“Today April 22 is world earth day, the day that we celebrate the planet that we are living and as an environmentalist we take it upon ourselves to bring this message to the people of Omida market because market is a place where a lot of waste are being generated and it will interest you to know that among the markets in Abeokuta Omida market stands out to be the most cleanest market and as a way of encouraging them, we have decided to come to visit them today that though they are trying but they are not there yet.
“We need to enlighten people on how to manage their waste because whatever happens to the planet reflects in us. When you have a very good environment that is when you can have a better living standard. We have brought the message to them, they are majorly women, they are mothers and we know that through them we are passing message to a lot of young ones at home that they should properly generate their waste and properly dispose their waste and they should also ensure that they join government in campaigning against open defecation.
” I want to commend the State Government under Prince Dr. Dapo Abiodun for his commitment towards ensuring clean environment in the State, i want to say that the commissioner of the Ministry of Environment is really trying. He is an experienced person, a man who has also encouraged young people to be recycling their waste. The state government is doing well in the area though we are not there yet but I can assure you the future is very bright” He concluded
Also speaking the Chairman of Nigerian Environmental Society, Alhaji Chief Jamiu Badmos while speaking with newsmen added that the reason for the program is to sensitize the market women against indiscriminate waste disposal and to educate them on how to maintain their waste.
He added that the sensitization talk has been impactful, saying that they have received good feedback from the market women.
“As you can see today is world earth day of which United Nation has set aside that everybody in particular, Nigeria Environmental Society of Nigeria to celebrate the day and part of our mandate is to go out sensitize, educate and enlighten our people statically when you talk of market, the population has to do with women and that is why on our own we have decided to domesticate today to come and interact with our people in Omida market and that is the essence of coming to this market today to celebrate world earth day. We have told them the importance of today and the importance of planet we have made them realize that whatever every body is doing is coming to this planet, whether you are a trader whether you are selling meat in the market, vegetable or whatever you sell every thing comes back to the earth it is the collective responsibility of everybody to take care of this environment. Because the environment must guarantee our well-being, we have to live fine today and people that are coming up, the generation yet unborn equally have right to decent living and on that note, we have educated and enlightened them and with the response and feed back, I think today has been an impactful day from the feed back the message is clear. Meanwhile the Baba Laje of Ibara, Chief Mutiu Ayinde urged the market women to embrace good environmental habits.
