The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested former Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, in connection with an alleged N700 billion fraud.

The former governor reportedly arrived at the main office of the EFCC in Abuja at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, in response to an invitation from the anti-corruption agency.

Timeless Update gathered that the arrest is reportedly linked to a petition filed by a civil society organization, the Network Against Corruption and Trafficking, which alleged that Emmanuel had misappropriated state funds and could not account for N700 billion during his tenure as governor.

The petitioner also alleged that Udom received N3 trillion from the federation Account in eight years but left a debt profile of N500 billion and unpaid ongoing projects worth N300 billion in Akwa Ibom state.

Emmanuel, a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) served as governor from 2015 to 2023.
