A call has been made to Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, to immediately suspend the local government election scheduled for February 22, 2025. Hon. Chief Adeniyi Ismail Oluwatosin, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, made this plea, citing the need to respect the rule of law and prevent further bloodshed.
According to Oluwatosin, the Court of Appeal has reinstated the duly elected local government officials, affirming their tenure remains valid until October 2025. Proceeding with a fresh election would be unconstitutional and a direct affront to judicial authority.
The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has also stated that conducting the election would be invalid and a violation of the Constitution.
Oluwatosin urged Governor Adeleke to heed this legal advice and refrain from actions that could lead to unnecessary political tension. He also called on the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) to respect the court ruling and halt preparations for the planned election.
The APC chieftain emphasized the importance of upholding democracy and ensuring the will of the people prevails. He encouraged APC members and the people of Osun State to remain peaceful and law-abiding, reiterating their commitment to justice, democracy, and the rule of law.
