The Ogun State Government has initiated measures to address security concerns amid reports of suspected bandits infiltrating the South-West region.
This was disclosed in a statement released on Friday by Hon. Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Strategy.
The statement highlighted the government’s proactive control of its security framework through effective collaboration between security agencies and local security networks.
It explained that part of the measures to safeguard farmlands includes deploying armed security personnel at the grassroots level to protect farmers and conducting regular patrols.
The statement noted that the state’s current security arrangements were reflected in the peaceful atmosphere experienced across the state during the festive period.
It read: “The reported influx of bandits from the North into the South-West coincided with the recent security meeting of heads of security agencies in Ogun State. After assessing the security situation, the agencies resolved to intensify their efforts to maintain the peace and stability that the state has enjoyed over the past months, particularly during the Christmas and New Year celebrations. This includes preventing any infiltration by bandits from other regions.
“Our security agencies have strengthened their strategies, including visible deployment across the state, routine patrols, securing key areas, intelligence-driven operations, and fostering community partnerships. Collaboration among agencies remains central to this effort.”
The statement also urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, especially the presence of unfamiliar individuals in their communities. Commercial farmers were advised to engage armed security escorts, deploy local surveillance, and enhance farm visibility with lighting and security structures.
Acknowledging regional efforts, the statement noted ongoing intelligence-sharing between Ogun and Oyo States regarding bandit movements in the axis.
It added: “We have actionable intelligence and a comprehensive plan to counter any bandit threat in Ogun State. All ethnic groups within the state—Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, Fulani, and others—are united in defending the peace and security of our communities.
“Furthermore, the state government reiterates its commitment to holding anyone accountable—regardless of ethnicity—who shelters or supports bandits operating in Ogun. Such individuals will face the full force of the law.”
