Jorge Valdano, an ex-footballer and former Real Madrid coach, recently weighed in on Barcelona’s struggles in attack during a public appearance.
Valdano emphasized the significant impact of Lamine Yamal’s absence on the team’s recent performances. Barcelona has struggled to secure wins in their last two games, suffering a narrow 0-1 loss to Real Sociedad and drawing 2-2 with Celta Vigo.
In the Real Sociedad match, Dani Olmo was unable to start due to gastroenteritis. Similarly, during the Celta clash, Raphinha was positioned on the left wing to cover for Yamal, a role that seemed to limit his effectiveness and connection with the game.
Barcelona’s ‘Best Signing’
Valdano proposed a solution: repositioning Dani Olmo as a playmaker behind Robert Lewandowski, enabling him to have a greater influence on the game.
Valdano’s high praise for Olmo, describing him as “the best signing in decades,” has sparked discussion among fans. His statement is bold, given the calibre of players Barcelona has brought in over the past two decades.
These include stars like Ronaldinho, Samuel Eto’o, Thierry Henry, Neymar, Luis Suarez, and, more recently, Robert Lewandowski. However, Valdano remains confident in Olmo’s potential to achieve similar success and play a pivotal role in Barcelona’s future achievements.
Lamine Yamal’s Impact
The absence of Lamine Yamal has disrupted Barcelona’s attacking dynamics, often forcing players like Olmo into less impactful roles. Valdano believes Olmo is versatile and capable of thriving in multiple positions, whether on the wings, as a centre forward, or as a playmaker.
“The absence of Lamine Yamal triggers a chain reaction, such as moving Olmo to the wing. Dani Olmo can excel anywhere – as a centre forward, on the left, or the right. But as a playmaker, he brings exceptional fluidity to the game,” Valdano told Mundo Deportivo.
He further stressed that Olmo is most effective when positioned behind the striker, where his creativity and vision can significantly enhance Barcelona’s gameplay.
“He is the best signing Barcelona has made in decades. He’s an extraordinary player who thrives in the crucial areas of the pitch. Yet, Yamal’s absence forces him into secondary roles, which, while starting points, limit his overall impact,” Valdano concluded.
With Yamal’s return still uncertain, Barcelona must strategize to maximize their attack and position Olmo where he can be most influential.
