President Bola Tinubu has commended the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) for the successful resumption of operations at the Port Harcourt refinery, marked by the commencement of petroleum product loading on Tuesday.
In a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information & Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu acknowledged the foundational work of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who initiated the comprehensive rehabilitation of Nigeria’s refineries. He also expressed appreciation to the African Export-Import Bank for its financial support in the project.
The President praised NNPCL’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, for his resilience in overcoming obstacles to achieve this significant milestone.
Following this success, Tinubu directed NNPCL to expedite the reactivation of the second Port Harcourt refinery, as well as the Warri and Kaduna refineries. These steps, he noted, will enhance Nigeria’s domestic production capabilities while complementing the output of privately-owned refineries, positioning the nation as a major energy hub. Additionally, the administration is intensifying its focus on the gas sector.
Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to overhauling Nigeria’s refineries to end the narrative of an oil-producing nation that struggles to meet domestic refining needs. He emphasized the need for patience, transparency, and accountability in rebuilding the nation’s infrastructure and called on citizens and institutions to remain committed and reliable in serving the country.
As part of his Renewed Hope Agenda, the President reiterated his administration’s goal to achieve energy self-sufficiency, strengthen energy security, and boost Nigeria’s export potential.
