Lagos 2027: Seyi Tinubu Leads Senator, Deputy Governor in Race to Succeed Sanwo-Olu

As the contest for Lagos State’s governorship in 2027 heats up, three prominent figures have emerged as leading contenders to succeed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Senator Tokunbo Abiru, Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, and entrepreneur Seyi Tinubu are competing for the position, as reported by ThisDay.

Senator Abiru, recognized for his financial acumen, transitioned smoothly from banking to politics. His background and close ties with Lagos’s business community have garnered him attention, positioning him as a technocrat aiming to advance Lagos’s economy. His network within the financial sector makes him a favored choice among elites who see him as capable of navigating Lagos’s economic complexities.

Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, the Deputy Governor, has built a reputation on loyalty and strong grassroots connections. Known for his hands-on approach and town hall meetings—often described by political insiders as “preparations for leadership”—Hamzat has earned trust among Lagosians. With extensive experience in governance, he enjoys substantial support within the political establishment.

Seyi Tinubu, son of former Lagos governor and current president Bola Tinubu, has also gained traction. Through philanthropic efforts and “rice diplomacy”—distribution of rice to communities—Seyi is building visibility across local neighborhoods and markets.

While his entry has stirred mixed reactions, he symbolizes continuity of the Tinubu legacy, a powerful factor in Lagos’s political landscape.
