A bill to amend the 1999 Constitution and form two new states from Oyo State has passed its second reading in the House of Representatives.
The bill, put forward by Akeem Adeyemi, son of the late Alaafin of Oyo, along with six other lawmakers, proposes the creation of Oyo State with Oyo town as its capital, and Ibadan State with Ibadan city as its capital.
During Tuesday’s plenary session, the constitution amendment bill was read for the second time and garnered approval from House members.
The plan is to split Oyo State’s 33 local government areas between the two proposed states.
The bill has now been sent to the Constitutional Review Committee for further consideration and action.
