Liverpool cemented their spot at the top of the Premier League with a tight 1-0 win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. This victory improved the Reds’ strong record against Palace, with just one loss in their last 15 meetings. Under new boss Arne Slot, Liverpool showed no signs of a transitional phase, securing their third-highest points total after seven games in their Premier League history. Meanwhile, Palace remained winless in the league this season.
The hosts believed they had made an ideal start when Eddie Nketiah netted in the first minute, but his effort was rightly ruled offside. That early disallowed goal would be Palace’s last clear chance until the final moments of the first half. Liverpool capitalized on Palace’s slow start, with Diogo Jota scoring the only goal. The Portuguese striker slipped past Trevoh Chalobah to slot in Cody Gakpo’s low cross, giving Liverpool the lead they wouldn’t surrender.
Liverpool dominated possession throughout the first half, but despite their control, clear-cut chances were hard to come by. Trent Alexander-Arnold nearly scored with a powerful strike from outside the box, but Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson made a strong save. As halftime neared, Palace came close to leveling when Ismaïla Sarr forced a crucial save from Alisson Becker.
After the interval, Liverpool continued to control the game and almost doubled their lead when Henderson denied Mohamed Salah from close range. Jota also missed a header from a promising position. Palace, however, began to find their footing in the second half, with Nketiah and Eberechi Eze testing Alisson before the Brazilian shot-stopper left the field due to injury.
In the closing minutes, substitute Vítězslav Jaroš made a vital save to deny Eze, while Will Hughes’ volley narrowly missed the target. Despite a late push from the home side, Liverpool held firm to claim all three points, strengthening their grip on the top spot. Crystal Palace, meanwhile, remain in the relegation zone and could sink further if other results don’t go their way.
Elsewhere, Arsenal extended their excellent Premier League form with a commanding 3-1 triumph over Southampton at the Emirates Stadium. The win keeps Arsenal in the race for the top spots, showcasing their offensive flair and resilience.
The match began evenly, but Southampton struck first in the 55th minute. Cameron Archer capitalized on a defensive error, darting into the box and firing past Arsenal keeper David Raya to put the visitors 1-0 ahead. The goal shocked the home crowd but sparked Arsenal into life.
Arsenal responded almost immediately, equalizing three minutes later. Bukayo Saka delivered a perfectly timed pass to Kai Havertz, who unleashed a fierce shot from the edge of the box, scoring off the left post to make it 1-1. The goal energized Arsenal, who pushed hard for the go-ahead goal.
Their pressure paid off in the 68th minute when Saka went from provider to scorer. After receiving a pass from Saka, Gabriel Martinelli made a smart run into the box, slotting home from Saka’s cross into the bottom corner to give Arsenal a 2-1 lead.
As the match drew to a close, Arsenal wrapped up the victory with a third goal in the 89th minute. A defensive lapse allowed Saka to pounce on a loose ball, calmly finishing past Southampton’s Aaron Ramsdale, sealing a 3-1 win.
Despite a late push from Southampton, including a dangerous shot from Tyler Dibling saved by Raya, Arsenal held on for another important win.
