Ogun Government, UNFPA Collaborate to Tackle Gender-Based Violence

In a bid to improve the response to Gender-Based Violence (GBV) cases, the Ogun State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), organized a retreat for Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) service providers.

During the retreat in Abeokuta, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hon. Adijat Adeleye, highlighted the event as an opportunity to enhance service delivery, improve survivors’ experiences, and foster a safer environment.

Adeleye noted that SARC service providers play a crucial role in supporting GBV survivors, offering them a safe and reliable space for recovery. “You are on the frontline of this fight, providing not just services but a safe, supportive environment for every survivor,” she said.

She announced the establishment of three new SARC centres in Abeokuta, Ilaro, and Ijebu-Ode, which will complement the existing centre in Sagamu, offering survivors access to medical care, psychological support, and justice.

Adeleye also revealed that the state government, in collaboration with UNFPA, has introduced toll-free lines (08000000666, 08000000555) to report GBV cases and provide necessary assistance.

In her welcome remarks, Permanent Secretary Mrs. Adejumoke Adewole encouraged participants to share ideas and align with global best practices to strengthen collaboration in addressing GBV. She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to justice and equality.

UNFPA Gender Reproductive Health Analyst, Dr. Esther Shomefun, stressed the importance of equipping SARC providers with the skills to offer comprehensive, survivor-centered care. She commended the partnership between the state and UNFPA in protecting survivors, emphasizing the organization’s zero-tolerance policy on sexual exploitation and abuse.

Representing the participants, Oluwatoyin Bada and Kafayat Odele thanked the organizers for the retreat, pledging to use the knowledge gained to enhance service delivery at their centres.
