The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo, has raised concerns about the ongoing governorship election in Edo State. After casting his vote, Ighodalo pointed out significant issues, particularly the delayed arrival of electoral materials in some areas, which he called a major setback.
Despite the challenges, he acknowledged the strong resolve of voters determined to participate.
“I am not pleased with the delays in the arrival of materials. This is a single-state election. INEC had ample time to prepare. But the people have stayed calm, showing patience and resolve. They are determined to vote and won’t be deterred, but they shouldn’t have to go through this,” he said, commending the persistence of the electorate.
Ighodalo also addressed reports of irregularities, particularly allegations against members of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“We are concerned about some manipulations, particularly from APC. There are reports that they are trying to disrupt the process. Some have been caught with ballot papers and PVCs,” he claimed.
He further expressed alarm over allegations of vote-buying, revealing that votes were allegedly being purchased for N15,000 to N20,000.
“They are doing everything to undermine the process,” he said, denouncing the impact on the election’s integrity.
Despite the obstacles, Ighodalo remains optimistic about the PDP’s chances.
“We will win by a landslide and move our state forward. If you’re at home, come out and cast your vote,” he encouraged.
He also praised the Nigerian military for their role in maintaining order during the election.
“The Nigerian military has shown great responsibility, protecting the people. I am very proud,” he stated.
Ighodalo emphasized the PDP’s connection with the electorate, highlighting the extensive groundwork done over the past months.
“We’ve spent ten months engaging with the people, sharing our vision. They have embraced us across the state. I don’t see how anyone can change that,” he said, citing grassroots support.
He also expressed confidence in INEC but acknowledged the ongoing issues.
“I believe INEC will deliver a fair election unless proven otherwise. We will win by a large margin.”
Addressing disturbances at polling units, Ighodalo mentioned that one of his supporters was arrested in Uromi.
“One of our supporters was arrested by a security group in Uromi. Carrying a gun to a polling unit is against the law. We won’t tolerate intimidation,” he asserted.
He questioned the apparent bias in law enforcement, pointing out that only PDP supporters had been arrested while APC members remained unchecked.
“How come only PDP supporters are being arrested? APC supporters do worse without consequence,” he noted, calling for fairness and accountability.
Ighodalo concluded by urging authorities to ensure a level playing field for all.
“Authorities must ensure fairness. This situation, especially with the Police, is getting out of hand,” he warned.
