Over 35,000 Police Officers Deployed for Edo Governorship Election, VIP Security Withdrawn

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, announced on Wednesday that 35,000 police officers will be deployed for the upcoming September 21 governorship election in Edo State.

Additionally, 8,000 personnel from other security agencies, including the armed forces and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), will be mobilized to support the police.

Egbetokun confirmed that security aides assigned to VIPs will be withdrawn to ensure neutrality and maintain security.

Speaking at a stakeholders meeting ahead of the election, organized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC),

Egbetokun emphasized the police’s role in maintaining security. During the event, INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu mentioned that former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar had arrived to oversee the signing of a peace accord between political parties and candidates.

Representatives from 17 political parties, the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), the Oba of Benin’s palace, civil society groups, and other stakeholders were present at the meeting.

Egbetokun also reaffirmed the suspension of activities by quasi-security organizations like the Edo State Security Network (ESSN), noting that they have no role to play on election day. He warned that anyone violating election laws would face legal consequences.

According to him, “It is the responsibility of all stakeholders to ensure elections proceed smoothly, with the police supported by other security agencies to ensure safety. We recognize the significance of our role and will act accordingly.”

Egbetokun added that all entry and exit points in Edo will be monitored, and movement will be restricted between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. He urged political leaders to caution their members against any acts of violence.
