LGA Election: 20 Aspirants Test Positive for Hard Drugs

At least 20 chairmanship aspirants for the upcoming Local Government elections in Kano State have tested positive for drugs, including cannabis.

This was disclosed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Monday, September 10.

According to the NDLEA’s Kano State commander, Abubakar Ahmed, the candidates tested positive for multiple substances during the screening process for the LG elections in the state.

Ahmed revealed that the aspirants, mostly those presented by the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP), tested positive for prohibited substances including nicotine, cannabis, benzodiazepines, and opioids.

None of the female aspirants tested positive for any of the substances, and the NDLEA assured that the screening process would continue.

Ahmed also noted that more aspirants would be tested to ensure that all those contesting for positions are free from substance use and abuse.

Once the screening is completed, the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) will proceed with its final verification exercise for the aspirants.

KANSIEC had earlier announced that the LG elections in Kano will take place on October 26, 2024, with a total of 44 chairmanship and 484 councillor positions to be contested by various parties across the state.
