No Mpox Cases in Ogun State – Government Clarifies

The Ogun State government has reassured residents that there is no outbreak of mpox in any of the 20 local government areas of the state.

The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, made this statement on Wednesday in a press release obtained by PLATFORM TIMES.

Coker assured there is no need for alarm as no mpox cases have been recorded across the twenty local government areas.

She added that the state has maintained vigilant surveillance since the global outbreak in 2022.

The commissioner highlighted that the Ministry has put in place all necessary measures to prevent, detect, and manage any public health concerns effectively.

Dr. Coker stated, “The last recorded case of Mpox in Ogun State was in May 2023, and no confirmed cases have been reported in the state since then.

“We are aware of the chickenpox cases in the state and have already implemented the necessary precautions. Public sensitization about mpox, chickenpox, and other diseases is ongoing through established channels. There is no need to worry.”

*DAILY POST* reports that as of August 18, 2024, the state’s surveillance system had recorded 151 suspected cases of mpox; however, 53 tested positive for chickenpox, and none were confirmed to be mpox.

The commissioner also advised residents to avoid close contact with people showing symptoms, especially those with rashes or skin lesions.

“Practice good hand hygiene by washing hands with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer regularly. Wear protective gear like gloves and masks when caring for someone suspected or confirmed to have Mpox.

“Avoid contact with animals that could carry the virus, such as rodents and primates, especially in areas where Mpox is prevalent. Ensure all meat is thoroughly cooked before consumption.”

She further urged residents to report any suspected cases to the nearest health facility in the state.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention announced on Friday that 40 confirmed cases of mpox have been recorded out of 830 suspected cases nationwide.
