Ogun Govt Partners with GIZ to Promote Economic Growth for Women

The Honourable Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development in Ogun State, Hon. Motunrayo Adijat Adeleye, recently hosted a delegation from the Skills Development for Youth Employment Programme. The project, commissioned by the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), is co-financed by the Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation (SDC) and implemented by the German Development Cooperation (GIZ).

According to Hon. Adeleye, “I had the privilege of hosting a delegation from the Skills Development for Youth Employment Programme, a project commissioned by the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) with co-financing from the Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation (SDC) and implemented by the German Development Cooperation (GIZ).”

The GIZ team, led by Helen Ogonna Igboka, Programme Component Manager for Gender and Inclusion, and Amile Christiann, GIZ Advisor, lauded the Ministry’s ongoing empowerment programs. They expressed interest in introducing a strategic policy framework to bolster women’s economic empowerment in Ogun State. A crucial element of their proposal is the establishment of a dashboard system designed to track and monitor empowerment initiatives across the state, ensuring efficiency and preventing duplication of efforts.

In addition, the delegation proposed sensitization programs at all Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs) to enhance women’s economic empowerment while implementing innovative training tools and methodologies.

Hon. Adeleye emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to socio-economic programs that uplift women, stating, “At the Ministry, we wholeheartedly embrace initiatives that will enhance the socio-economic well-being of women.” She also took the opportunity to brief the GIZ team on the Ogun State Women Empowerment Scheme, a transformative initiative championed by the administration of His Excellency, Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON. Furthermore, she highlighted the Nigeria for Women Project, a government-backed initiative aimed at providing skill acquisition opportunities across all Local Government areas in Ogun State.

This partnership marks a significant step toward strengthening women’s economic independence and ensuring that empowerment programs in Ogun State are effectively implemented and monitored.
