Ogun State Expands Toll-Free Helplines to Strengthen Response to Sexual Violence

In a decisive move to enhance support for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence, the Ogun State Government, through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, has launched additional toll-free helplines. This initiative aims to improve accessibility to immediate medical, psychosocial, and legal assistance.

Hon. Motunrayo Adijat Adeleye, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, emphasized the significance of the expanded helplines in a press statement.

“The expanded toll-free helplines cover multiple locations across the state for easy accessibility. The contact numbers are as follows: Ministry’s Headquarters, Oke-Mosan (08000000 666), Sagamu SARC (08000000 555), Ilaro SARC (08000000 077), Ijebu-Ode SARC (08000000 088), and Abeokuta SARC (08000000 099),” she announced.

The Commissioner highlighted that with the unwavering support of Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, the Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARC) are well-equipped with trained professionals dedicated to offering confidential and compassionate support to survivors.

“With the support of His Excellency, we reaffirm our dedication to creating a safer Ogun State, where every individual, regardless of age or gender, can live without fear. The present administration remains resolute in enforcing strict penalties for offenders while continuously enhancing the support systems for survivors,” Adeleye stated.

She further urged residents, civil society organizations, law enforcement agencies, and community stakeholders to play active roles in the fight against sexual violence. “Reporting cases promptly, supporting survivors, and promoting a culture of zero tolerance toward abuse are critical steps toward eliminating sexual and gender-based violence from our society,” she said.

Adeleye also addressed the impact of social media exposure on survivors, encouraging them to utilize the available support systems rather than seeking redress on online platforms. “Survivors are encouraged to speak up and seek help, knowing that they are not alone. Enough of exposing sensitive life issues to social media, where the stigma keeps increasing and spreading even after the issue is resolved,” she added.

With the introduction of these additional toll-free lines, Ogun State is reinforcing its commitment to ensuring justice for survivors while fostering a society where safety and dignity prevail.
