The APC Youth League, a leading youth support group within the All Progressives Congress (APC), has criticised what it describes as an unnecessary affront by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja over the weekend, the National President of the League, Comrade Olamide Lawal, condemned the senator’s actions, warning that they could disrupt the peace and integrity of the Nigerian Senate.
The controversy stems from Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Akpabio, a claim that has sparked intense debate and tension within the upper legislative chamber.
While acknowledging the senator’s right to voice her concerns, Comrade Lawal criticized her approach, describing it as “unbecoming and detrimental to the Senate as an institution.”
According to him, “As a responsible and respected youths of the APC, we want to urge Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan to reflect on her actions and consider the consequences of her behavior.”
“It is essential to maintain order and decorum in the Senate, and Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s actions have fallen short of this standard.” He noted
“You can see that the Senate’s decision to suspend her for six months as recommended by the Senate Committee on Ethics and Public Petitions underscoring the gravity of her actions have also received widespread commendations from various groups. We also like to add our voice in support of that suspension.”
However, Akpabio has since apologized for his remarks, stating that he would never intentionally denigrate any woman.
Comrade Olamide Lawal called on Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan to reconsider her approach and work towards maintaining a peaceful and respectful atmosphere in the Senate.
He said, “The six-month suspension is a significant consequence, and one that highlights the importance of maintaining order and decorum in the Senate and it would serve as a deterrent and lesson to everyone of us too, moving forward.”
