Ogun State Govt to Vaccinate 420,000 Cattle Against Anthrax in Three Months

The Ogun State Government has unveiled plans to vaccinate 420,000 cattle against anthrax within the next three months, aiming to protect animal health and prevent potential outbreaks.

Dr. Taiwo Jolaoso, Director of Ogun State Veterinary Services, disclosed this on Monday while providing updates on the ongoing vaccination campaign.

He stated that the exercise commenced last week in Itori, Ewekoro Local Government Area, where 250 cattle received vaccinations.

“The state government intends to vaccinate over 420,000 cattle against anthrax within the next three months,” Jolaoso announced.

He clarified that the exercise is preventive, emphasizing, “There is no outbreak of the disease in the state. The vaccination is purely a precautionary measure to safeguard the health of animals and ensure the wellbeing of residents.”

Jolaoso highlighted the collaboration between the state and federal governments, noting that the federal government supplied the vaccines for the initiative.

Collaboration with Herders

During a meeting with cattle herders, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Mrs. Kehinde Jokotoye, urged herders to cooperate with veterinary officials to guarantee the success of the statewide campaign.

“The initiative specifically targets migratory herders as part of efforts to prevent transboundary animal diseases and protect the wellbeing of livestock, herders, and the general public,” Jokotoye explained.

Miyetti Allah Commends Initiative

The Secretary of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association in the state, Alhaji Usman Bello, praised the efforts of both the state and federal governments. He acknowledged their dedication to livestock and herders’ welfare.

“This exercise will greatly benefit our cattle and enhance the overall wellbeing of the people,” Bello stated, pledging the association’s full cooperation.

With the campaign already in progress, Ogun State’s proactive measures demonstrate its commitment to protecting animal health and public safety.
