During today’s plenary session, a bill sponsored by Senator Barau I. Jibrin, the Deputy Senate President of Nigeria and senator representing Kano North Senatorial District, proposing the renaming of the Federal University of Education to Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, Kano, successfully passed its first reading.
This significant legislative step was one of six bills that advanced through the first reading stage during the session.
In addition to the progress on the renaming bill, Senator Jibrin contributed to discussions on the 2024-2026 Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP). He emphasized the importance of collective efforts in achieving the nation’s revenue projections.
The GDP growth rate is projected to reach 5.5% by 2026 and a remarkable 44.4% by 2055, driven by investments in infrastructure, agriculture, and telecommunications. While expressing optimism about these projections, Senator Jibrin stressed the need to transition from setting ambitious targets to ensuring their implementation.
“I am optimistic about the posture of the government. These projections are achievable because the government is committed to their realization,” he stated.
The renaming of the Federal University of Education honors the legacy of the late Maitama Sule, a prominent Nigerian statesman, and reflects efforts to preserve and celebrate the nation’s rich heritage.
