Tinubu Endorses Global Alliance Against Hunger, Calls for UN Security Council Reform at G20 Summit

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed strong support for the creation of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, an initiative spearheaded by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Speaking at the G20 Summit in Brazil, Tinubu highlighted the importance of the alliance in addressing critical global challenges, such as hunger and poverty, and underscored its alignment with Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“This bold initiative aligns with my administration’s renewed hope agenda and our commitment to eradicating poverty and fostering sustainable development,” Tinubu said. He noted that the Global Alliance aims to bring together governments, international organizations, and civil society to tackle both immediate humanitarian needs and the structural causes of hunger and poverty.

The Nigerian leader affirmed the country’s readiness to leverage international cooperation to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those focused on zero hunger and poverty eradication. “Nigeria is ready to leverage international cooperation to meet Sustainable Development Goals, particularly zero hunger and poverty eradication while improving citizens’ lives,” Tinubu stated.

In addition to endorsing the alliance, Tinubu advocated for significant reforms in global governance structures. He called for urgent changes to the United Nations Security Council to ensure better representation of global diversity, emphasizing Nigeria’s readiness to represent Africa on the council.

The president also stressed the need for reforming global taxation systems to foster equitable development and bridge the economic gap between the Global North and South. “We must prioritize reforming global taxation for equitable development to bridge the North-South global divide and create a fairer global financial system,” he noted.

Tinubu’s remarks reflect Nigeria’s commitment to playing a pivotal role in shaping international policies aimed at eradicating poverty and achieving sustainable development. His participation at the G20 Summit signals Nigeria’s determination to be an active contributor to global initiatives addressing pressing economic and social challenges.
