Ogun 2027: MURIC Advocates for Muslim Governor to Enhance Religious Balance in Leadership

With the 2027 Ogun State gubernatorial election approaching, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has renewed its call for a Muslim governor, urging political leaders to address longstanding religious imbalances in state leadership.

This advocacy was detailed in a statement from Alhaji Olaleye Rasheed Damilare, Secretary of MURIC Ogun State, with the endorsement of Alhaji Tajudeen Jimoh Alao, the organization’s State Chairman.

According to MURIC, the state’s leadership history has largely favored Christian governors, leaving Muslim representation comparatively limited, despite the religious diversity within Ogun’s population.

“Since the start of democracy in Nigeria, four of the five civilian governors—Victor Olabisi Onabanjo, Olusegun Osoba, Justus Olugbenga Daniel, and Dapo Abiodun—have been Christians, leading for a cumulative 26 years,” the statement explained. “Meanwhile, only one Muslim, Governor Ibikunle Amosun, served for eight years.”

While MURIC’s motto is “Dialogue, Not Violence,” the group emphasizes that a more inclusive leadership approach could help counter feelings of marginalization. They argue that a balanced representation of both Christians and Muslims in governance would foster inclusivity and unity across Ogun’s diverse society.

Alhaji Alao clarified that MURIC is not seeking special treatment but is instead advocating for equitable representation. “Agitation is not our strategy,” he said. “Our aim is to raise awareness on marginalization issues and foster dialogue for justice and balance.”

The group appealed to political stakeholders—including party leaders, traditional rulers, civil society groups, and voters—to support a qualified Muslim candidate in the upcoming election. MURIC envisions a governor who respects Ogun State’s diverse religious landscape and supports inclusive development for all citizens.

Addressing the Muslim community, MURIC highlighted that the 2027 election offers a chance to address past imbalances. “This is an opportunity to move toward a more inclusive Ogun State,” the group declared, urging active participation in the electoral process.

Through hashtags like #FreeOgunMuslims and #2027ForMuslimGovernor, MURIC’s advocacy is resonating with Ogun residents concerned about religious representation. The group asserts that Ogun’s diverse population deserves leadership that is unbiased and committed to unity, pledging continued advocacy for lasting change.
