Bill for New State Creation Passes Second Reading in House of Representatives

A bill proposing the establishment of Ogoja State has successfully passed its second reading in the House of Representatives on Thursday.

The bill, introduced by Godwin Offiono and three other sponsors during the plenary session, aims to amend the 1999 Constitution to add a new state in the South-south region.

While presenting the motion, Mr. Offiono emphasized that the “purpose of this bill is based on equity.”

If enacted, the legislation would increase the total number of states in the South-south region to seven.

The bill advanced to the second reading without opposition from any members and has been referred to the House Committee on Constitution Review.
