Senate Condemns Local Government Elections, Calls Them a “Mockery of Democracy”

The Nigerian Senate has strongly criticized the recent local government elections held across several states, describing them as a “mockery” and a “betrayal of democracy.”

As reported by Vanguard, this statement was made after a motion was presented by Senator Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South), who argued that the elections in Benue State were fundamentally flawed and lacked transparency.

Senator Emmanuel Udende (APC, Benue North East) backed the motion, saying that despite his political alignment, he could not support an unjust electoral process.

Similarly, Senator Titus Zam (APC, Benue North West) also condemned the elections, asserting that there were no credible elections in any of the 23 local governments in Benue.

Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin criticized the elections as a “national tragedy,” pointing out that the public’s trust in the electoral system has been eroded.

He observed that citizens often avoid participating in elections, as results are predetermined, undermining democratic principles.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio called for constitutional reforms to elevate local governments as a critical third tier of government.

He acknowledged the Supreme Court’s ruling on direct funding for local governments but emphasized the need for credible elections to regain public confidence.
