President Tinubu Condemns Rivers Election Violence, Directs Police to Secure the State

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed concern over the recent violence in Rivers State after Saturday’s Local Government Area elections.

According to reports, after the election, Governor Sim Fubara swore in the newly elected chairmen of the 23 local government areas on Sunday.

However, following the ceremony, several Rivers LGA secretariats were attacked by hoodlums on Monday, disrupting the newly elected officials’ ability to assume office.

Responding to the situation, Tinubu, through a statement on Monday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, voiced his alarm over the acts of arson and explosions in the state.

Tinubu urged Fubara, political figures, and their followers in Rivers State to remain calm and uphold the rule of law.

He also called on security forces to quickly restore and maintain peace, law, and order.

The statement reads: “President Bola Tinubu has called on Governor Siminalayi Fubara, political leaders, and their supporters in Rivers State to exercise restraint and uphold the rule of law.

“In light of recent tensions after last Saturday’s local council election, the President expressed deep concern over reports of arson and explosions in the state.

“He urged all political actors to de-escalate the situation and discourage their supporters from engaging in violence or destructive actions. President Tinubu directed law enforcement to immediately restore peace, law, and order.

“He emphasized that public institutions built with taxpayer money must be protected from vandalism and warned against taking the law into one’s own hands, particularly after 25 years of uninterrupted democracy.

“According to Tinubu, political disputes should be resolved through the judiciary, and this election should be no exception.”
