Southern Governors to Team Up with Traditional Rulers for Regional Development -Gov Abiodun

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, announced that governors from southern Nigeria are prepared to collaborate with traditional rulers to promote peace, unity, and drive development in the region.

Governor Abiodun made this statement on Tuesday during a visit from the Technical Committee of the Southern Nigeria Traditional Rulers Council at his office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

He emphasized that traditional rulers, as custodians of the rich cultural heritage of the region, serve as a vital reminder of the enduring significance of tradition, commending their essential role in shaping society through their ongoing efforts to promote peace, preserve cultural heritage, and foster collaboration among the Southern States.

Abiodun stated, “As Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum, I want to affirm that we are dedicated to creating an environment where this strong partnership with the Southern Nigeria Traditional Rulers Council can flourish, where your voices are acknowledged, and your advice is valued in the formulation and implementation of government policies.”

“Your influence goes beyond ceremonial duties; you act as the bridge between the people and the government, representing the grassroots, embodying wisdom, and upholding our shared values.

“In peaceful times and during challenges, you stand as pillars of stability, unity, and progress for our communities. All southern states in Ogun recognize the importance of integrating these values into governance, given our deep historical ties to tradition and culture.”

Abiodun described the southern states as the economic heart of the nation. However, he highlighted the various challenges confronting the region, including security issues, inadequate infrastructure, out-of-school children, economic development, youth unemployment, and social cohesion.

“Addressing these challenges demands a unified approach, where government policies are shaped by the insights and experiences of those at the grassroots level—insights that you, our royal leaders, are uniquely positioned to provide.

“Your involvement in conflict resolution and peace-building is invaluable, and the trust and respect you command among the populace make you essential allies in ensuring the security and stability of our communities.

“As we continue to face threats to peace, including insecurity and community clashes, your cooperation with law enforcement and government remains vital. Furthermore, traditional rulers are not only custodians of culture but also stewards of our environment and future. We must work together on preserving our lands, protecting our natural resources, and promoting sustainable development,” Governor Abiodun emphasized.

He expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the decisive steps taken to revitalize the nation’s economy, noting that the ongoing construction of the Lagos-Calabar Coastline road would significantly enhance development in the region.

Earlier, the Co-Chairman, King Jaja of Opobo, Dr. Dandeson Douglas Jaja, noted that the goal of the Southern Nigeria Traditional Rulers Council is to foster unity among the people of southern Nigeria and contribute to the betterment of the nation.

Dr. Jaja highlighted the necessity for collaboration between traditional rulers and governors from the southern region to promote peace and development, advocating for synergy to enhance the culture and traditions of the area, as well as a unified voice on national matters.

He stated, “There is a need for understanding among the traditional rulers and governors of southern Nigeria to ensure peace and development in the region.

“The aim of this council is to promote the unity of Nigeria and better understand our traditional institutions in southern Nigeria. We are here first because you are the chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum, and we cannot visit any other governor without first paying our respects to you as the chairman.

“This council has been formed to serve Nigeria’s interests and enhance understanding of the region’s cultural diversity. We hope that the Southern Nigeria Traditional Rulers Council will facilitate collaboration to promote culture and traditions and create a unified voice on national issues,” King Jaja added.

He praised the state government for the improvements made in the region, noting significant progress over the past five years.

The Chairman of the Ogun State Council of Obas and Olu of Ilaro, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, stated that the Southern traditional rulers visited the state to discuss issues related to the region’s development and to devise solutions for the numerous challenges faced.

Other members of the Technical Committee who met with the governor included the Olowu of Owu, Oba Saka Matemilola; the Olofin of Isheri, Oba Suleiman Bamgbade; the Elegusi of Ikate, Oba Saheed Ademola Elegusi; Alara of Ilara, Oba Olufolarin Ogunsanwo; Oniru of Iluland, Oba Abdulwasiu Lawal; and the Elemuren of Emuren, Oba Adesegun Alowonle.

In an interview, another Co-Chairman of the Council and Chairman of the South East Traditional Rulers Council, the Obi of Obinugwa, Eze Cletus Ilomuanya, mentioned that the Council is in the state to address and discuss issues affecting the region, particularly concerning economic cooperation, relationships, and security.
