Presidency Denies Report of Tinubu Ordering CBN Governor Cardoso to Resign

The Presidency has dismissed reports claiming that President Bola Tinubu instructed Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Yemi Cardoso to step down.

Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, rejected these claims, calling them false.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on September 17, 2024, Onanuga described the report as “a bundle of lies,” stressing that Tinubu had not asked Cardoso to resign.

According to Channels Television, the denial followed claims that President Tinubu had instructed Cardoso to vacate his position before his recent trip to China, despite efforts from prominent Yoruba figures to keep him in the role.

Yemi Cardoso, who took office as CBN Governor on September 22, 2023, has been under pressure over his management of Nigeria’s economic issues, particularly challenges with the Naira.

Cardoso, an experienced economic and development policy advisor, was nominated by Tinubu on September 15, 2023, and confirmed by the National Assembly shortly after.

The speculation surrounding Cardoso’s position underscores concerns about Nigeria’s economic leadership and the CBN’s role in tackling inflation and stabilizing the currency.

The Presidency’s statement aims to address the rumors and clarify that no resignation directive came from President Tinubu.
