The Ogun Chapter of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has praised Gov. Dapo Abiodun for releasing N5.3 billion in gratuities to the state’s pensioners.
In a letter dated September 17, signed by Waheed Oloyede and Bola Lawal, the Chairman and Secretary respectively, the pensioners expressed their appreciation in Abeokuta on Tuesday.
The statement emphasized that the governor’s action would reduce the backlog of pending gratuities.
The pensioners acknowledged the state’s sincerity and consideration for the elderly, who have been deprived of their entitlements for years.
They also commended the government for its consistent and timely payment of monthly pensions, allowing retirees to manage healthcare expenses.
“Your administration has generously extended various palliatives and subsidies to us, easing the burden of the current economic situation,” they noted.
The pensioners appealed for an approval of pension increases in line with the 2019 Federal Government Circular on the Consequential Adjustment of Pensions, citing the inadequacy of current amounts for medical needs and the rising cost of living.
They also requested representation in the upcoming wage increase negotiations to ensure parity with recently retired workers, as directed by the Federal Government.
“We pledge our unwavering support for you and your administration at all times,” they concluded.
