Ogun Assembly Approves Power Sector Reform Bill

The Ogun State House of Assembly on Thursday passed a bill aimed at enhancing electricity generation, transmission, and distribution within the state.

This legislation seeks to create an electricity market, establish key power sector bodies, and ensure the enforcement of consumer rights and responsibilities.

Deputy Speaker, Mrs. Bolanle Ajayi (APC-Yewa South), presented the Committee’s report during the plenary session in Abeokuta.

Ajayi moved for the adoption of the report, which was supported by Minority Leader, Lukman Adeleye (PDP-Odogbolu).

Majority Leader, Mr. Yusuf Serif (APC-Ado Odo Ota 1), proposed the bill’s third reading, seconded by Adeleye.

The bill’s second reading, held on August 28, sparked a debate among lawmakers on its significance.

Some thanked the federal and state governments, alongside the National Assembly, for moving electricity from the Exclusive to the Concurrent legislative list.

They noted this change empowered states to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity locally.

The legislators highlighted that this initiative would foster competition among electricity providers, support industries, and boost business investments.

They further explained that state-generated power could address over 50% of the challenges faced by residents.

Improved access to electricity, they added, would also curb rural-urban migration within the state.
