Toronto Police have arrested Amaka Sunnberger, a Nigerian woman accused of making threats to poison and kill members of the Yoruba and Edo communities in Canada.
Constable Laura Brabant confirmed that Sunnberger was taken into custody on Sunday, September 1.
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), led by Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, had previously submitted a petition to Honourable Patrick Brown, the Mayor of Brampton, Canada, regarding Sunnberger’s actions.
On August 25, 2024, Sunnberger allegedly posted online threats directed at Yoruba and Edo people living in Canada.
In response to the petition, the Toronto Police announced that Sunnberger faces charges for making threats. She is set to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice, located at 2201 Finch Avenue West, on Monday, September 2, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. in courtroom 107.
The police statement noted, “On Sunday, September 1, 2024, Toronto Police arrested Amaka Sonnberger, 46, of Toronto. This case is being investigated as a possible hate-motivated crime. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the police at 416-808-3500, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477) or online at www.222tips.com.
“When a potential hate-motivated crime is reported, the investigation may be managed by a Divisional investigator with support from the Hate Crime Unit (HCU), or it might be handled solely by the HCU.
“If an alleged criminal act (such as assault or mischief) is believed to have been motivated by bias, prejudice, or hatred, the officer in charge may consult with the Crown. Should an individual be charged and convicted, the Judge may consider hate as an aggravating factor during sentencing.
“Hate propaganda offences, including wilful promotion of hatred and advocating genocide, require the Attorney General’s consent to pursue charges, which are often filed at a later date.”
