Sule Lamido: Before Criticizing Tinubu, Consider His Rise to Power

In a recent discussion with the Nigerian Tribune, former Jigawa State governor and key member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sule Lamido, shared his frank views on President Bola Tinubu’s political skills and how he achieved power.

Lamido described Tinubu as a bold and skilful politician who managed to navigate the Nigerian political scene to secure the presidency, even in the face of significant opposition.

Reflecting on Tinubu’s rise, Lamido highlighted the tactics that led to his success. “He was skillful at understanding the Nigerian political system and using it to his advantage. He played it well,” Lamido noted, emphasizing Tinubu’s calculated approach to politics.

Lamido also recalled Tinubu’s confident proclamation before the All Progressives Congress (APC) convention. “In Abeokuta, Ogun State, he [Tinubu] declared it was his turn to lead Nigeria,” Lamido recounted, highlighting the assurance with which Tinubu chased his presidential goal.

Despite Tinubu’s strong position, Lamido stressed that the PDP is focused on regaining power in the 2027 elections, acknowledging the significant challenge posed by Tinubu’s leadership. “We are working diligently, but it’s a daunting task. Competing with Tinubu, given his grip on the country and his bold stance against what he perceives as Nigeria’s interest, is tough,” Lamido conceded.

He also discussed Tinubu’s perseverance and resolve in overcoming political challenges throughout his career. “Tinubu is very bold; he is self-made and has fought his way through many struggles,” Lamido observed, mentioning Tinubu’s past conflicts with the Alliance for Democracy (AD), Afenifere, and ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Lamido also mentioned Tinubu’s success at the APC convention, where he allegedly outmaneuvered even President Muhammadu Buhari. “At the APC convention, despite Buhari’s opposition, he came out on top,” Lamido claimed, underscoring Tinubu’s power and determination.

Wrapping up his remarks, Lamido cautioned against underestimating Tinubu, describing him as a significant political figure. “Don’t underestimate someone like him. Look at his journey. He faced many challenges to reach his current position,” Lamido commented.

He further characterized Tinubu’s style of governance as autocratic, suggesting that “under Tinubu, Nigeria is like his personal domain; he acts as the ruler. If you observe closely, he doesn’t concern himself with what others think.”

Lamido’s remarks provide a candid reflection on Tinubu’s political journey and the hurdles that await the opposition in maneuvering Nigeria’s intricate political scene under his leadership.
