There are numerous reports that Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, is considering leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the Action People’s Party (APP).
The rumored switch is said to be due to the alleged control of the PDP’s structure in the state by his predecessor and former political mentor, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Sources indicate that the governor may make the move soon along with his supporters, in light of the upcoming local government elections.
This potential shift was mentioned by the National Chairman of the Action People’s Party, Uche Nnadi, during a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Monday, August 12.
Nnadi was responding to the attack on the APP headquarters in the GRA area of Port Harcourt, describing the incident as a grave offense and an act of terrorism by what he termed as criminal elements.
“It is indeed a dark day for democracy. We strongly condemn the attack on our Rivers State chapter office. It is a serious crime. It is an act of terrorism, a treasonable offense.
“We thank God Almighty for sparing the lives of our members. Just after they left following a late-night strategy meeting, this appalling act was committed.
“God protected our members, ensuring no lives were lost to these criminals,” Nnadi stated.
Nnadi also linked the attack to the local government election in the state set for October 5, 2024, where he claimed the party is prepared to make a significant impact.
“As a party, we remain undeterred. We believe they are sensing the momentum of Rivers people joining our party in large numbers as we prepare for the upcoming local government elections, and they aim to disrupt the positive intentions of our esteemed Governor of Rivers State, who plans to hold the local government election,” he told Punch.
He further asserted that the APP is the leading contender in the forthcoming local government elections.
