The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), led by Director General Mrs. Zubaida Umar, has mobilized all its Zonal, Territorial, and Operational offices nationwide. These offices will collaborate with State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs) to conduct rescue operations and assess flood situations.
NEMA’s offices are strategically located in Lagos, Ibadan, Ekiti, Abuja, Minna, Jos, Enugu, Owerri, Port Harcourt, Edo, Uyo, Kano, Sokoto, Kaduna, Maiduguri, Yola, and Gombe. The agency also operates a toll-free emergency contact line: 0800CALLNEMA (080022556362) and maintains active social media platforms for public feedback.
Search and Rescue officers have been dispatched across the states, coordinating efforts with SEMAs and other stakeholders in recently flooded areas. Rapid assessments are underway to determine additional support needed for impacted communities.
In addition to rescue operations, NEMA continues its public sensitization campaigns to alert communities of predicted floods. On July 3rd, Mrs. Umar visited Anambra State, engaging with local leaders to discuss flood prevention and mitigation strategies. Similar advocacy visits have been made to other states.
Ahead of the rainy season, NEMA has placed flood sensitization jingles in the media and held emergency coordination forums with key stakeholders.
The agency also provided state governments with risk assessments and recommended actions to mitigate flood impacts. States that have followed NEMA’s advisories report significant improvements in flood management.
NEMA reiterates its flood warnings and urges all stakeholders, including state and local governments, to remain vigilant as the rainy season intensifies.
