Sanusi Remains Emir, Affirms Kano State Government

The Kano State government has affirmed the ruling handed down by a Federal High Court under Justice Abdullahi Muhammad Liman earlier today.

Addressing reporters at the Government House, Kano’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Haruna Isah Dederi, emphasized, “On June 20th, 2024, Federal High Court No. 1, Kano, delivered its verdict on the ongoing legal dispute. I stand before you on behalf of Governor Abba K. Yusuf and the State Government to clarify matters arising from the dissolution of the Five emirates and subsequent deposition of the former emirs, including those of 8 metropolitan local governments. We respect the Federal High Court’s decision regarding the Kano Emirates Council (Repeal) Law, 2024, viewing it as a testament to upholding the rule of law.

“The court’s ruling unequivocally validates the law passed by the Kano State House of Assembly and endorsed by the Governor on May 23rd, 2024, at 5:10 PM. This aspect of the judgment is pivotal.

“Furthermore, the ruling affirms the legality of actions taken by the government prior to the interim court order, validating the dissolution of the Five emirates established in 2019 and the subsequent deposition of their emirs. Consequently, Muhammadu Sanusi II remains the Emir of Kano.

“The court also granted our request to stay proceedings pending the Court of Appeal’s decision on jurisdiction. It is noteworthy that the law’s enactment and the reinstatement of His Highness, Emir Muhammad Sunusi II, occurred on May 23rd, 2024, predating the interim order served on us on May 27th, 2024.”
