Cholera: One Dies, Others Hospitalized in Ogun State

The devastating cholera outbreak, which has claimed approximately 30 lives nationwide, has now reached Ogun State, causing a fatality in the Ijebu-Igbo area.

 

The outbreak, confirmed to have taken the life of a 62-year-old woman, occurred after she contracted the disease while caring for her infected child.

 

The incident, which took place three days ago, has resulted in three additional hospitalizations.

 

In a press briefing on Thursday, Dr. Kunle Ashimi, Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Ogun State, acknowledged the extensive impact of cholera, which has spread to 30 states across the nation, including Ogun.

 

Dr. Ashimi offered condolences to the victims, stating, “Cholera has now been reported in 30 states, including Ogun State, with at least 30 deaths nationwide. We pray for the souls of the deceased.”

 

Dr. Ashimi also confirmed that the NMA is vigilant and that the government has provided contact numbers for reporting new cases.

 

The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, confirmed the fatality in a brief message on WhatsApp.

 

She also confirmed that five other persons have been hospitalized.

In 2023, the state recorded 236 cases and 12 fatalities within one month.

 

The affected areas included Ijebu North, Abeokuta North, and Abeokuta South.
