Ahmad Aliyu, governor of Sokoto state, faces public backlash for renaming a road after Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu.

The road, previously known as “Pepsi Road,” was scheduled for commissioning on June 3 by Katsina state governor, Umaru Dikko Radda, but the event was postponed.

On Saturday, a photo of the renamed road, “Seyi Ahmed Bola Tinubu Road,” went viral on social media, ahead of its rescheduled commissioning date, which has not been announced.

A local resident expressed disapproval, stating that Mr. Tinubu has not made significant contributions to Sokoto or Nigeria.

“The governor overlooked many distinguished natives of Sokoto and instead named a road after the president’s son, who has no ties to Sokoto or the northern region,” said resident Salisu Ahmadu to Peoples Gazette on Saturday afternoon.

Sharing a photo of the newly renamed road, an X user, @UncleAnass said, “This is how @Ahmedaliyuskt is tarnishing the name of Sokoto with his incompetence. Imagine naming a road after Seyi Tinubu. Not even the senior Tinubu. This is embarrassing. This is really sad. Allah ya isa.”

Another X user, Heinz_Gunner, commented, “Road to North Korea. This is how it starts!!,” while @jnraib2 remarked, “Even Lagos didn’t name a road after Seyi Tinubu, but Sokoto governor must impress Tinubu.”

@AsIngawa001 said, “Seyi Tinubu road in Sokoto State stands as a testament to Nigeria’s practice of honoring individuals with minimal contribution to the country’s progress.”

Ahmad Aliyu’s spokesperson, Abubakar Bawa, was unavailable for comments.

Despite holding no official position in his father’s administration, Seyi Tinubu seems influential within the APC, often accompanying his father on international trips.

Mr. Tinubu was barred from attending a Federal Executive Council meeting a few months ago.
