The Federal Government and Organised Labour reached significant resolutions to address the ongoing nationwide strike. The strike, initiated by Labour to press for a higher National Minimum Wage, saw the intervention of the National Assembly’s leadership yesterday.
During exhaustive negotiations at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, both parties agreed to the following:
1. The President of Nigeria has committed to implementing a National Minimum Wage exceeding N60,000.
2. The Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage will convene daily for the next week to finalize an agreeable wage.
3. In recognition of the President’s commitment, Organised Labour will immediately convene meetings of its organs to consider this pledge.
4. No worker will face victimization due to participation in the strike.
These resolutions mark a pivotal step towards resolving the wage dispute and ensuring industrial harmony.
The government’s representatives, Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, and Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, alongside Labour leaders Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and Festus Osifo, President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), signed the agreement.
