Its General Secretary, Afolabi Olawale, stated on Saturday that the union is committed to ensuring full compliance with the directive.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have announced an indefinite nationwide strike starting Monday to protest the proposed new minimum wage.
In a joint statement, NLC President Joe Ajaero and TUC President Festus Osifo declared the strike due to the tripartite committee’s failure to agree on a new minimum wage and the recent hike in electricity tariffs.
Afolabi expressed the union’s concern over the federal government’s indifferent stance on negotiating a new minimum wage for Nigerian workers.
“This is in light of the various socio-economic policies of this administration that have impoverished the working people of this country.
“Leaders of our great union at all levels, from the units, zones, and branches, should immediately put all processes in place to ensure total compliance with this directive.”
Additionally, the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) announced it is mobilizing its members for the strike following the NLC and TUC’s directive.
Acting General Secretary Dominic Igwebike directed members to comply with the strike over issues including inconclusive negotiations on the minimum wage, the electricity tariff hike, and the categorization of electricity consumers into bands.
“Given the above, all national, state, and chapter executives are requested to start the mobilization of our members in total compliance with this directive to ensure the government does the right thing as stated above.
“The withdrawal of services becomes effective on Sunday, June 2nd, at midnight,” Igwebike stated.
