Scores of protesters on Friday marched to the Aso Rock Presidential Villa and the National Assembly, protesting Thursday’s reinstatement of Muhammed Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano.
On Thursday, the Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, signed the new Kano Emirate Council Law after the State House of Assembly repealed the law that created four additional emirates in the city by then-governor Abdullahi Ganduje.
Although a federal high court in Kano ordered the state government not to enforce the new law, the former Central Bank Governor has since been turbaned as the 16th Emir of Kano.
Speaking with reporters during the protest on Friday, the leader of the Northern Nigeria Peace and Development Foundation, Abdullahi Saleh, said the governor was undermining his predecessor’s legacy.
He called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene quickly to prevent the state from descending into chaos.
“A lot has been going wrong in the state, but concerned patriots of Nigeria had thought it best to allow Kano state to resolve its issues.
“However, Thursday’s hasty actions of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State, who dismissed five Emirs to reappoint Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi as the 16th Emir of Kano, have prompted us to raise the alarm about the governor’s harmful excesses.
“Since taking office, Governor Abba Yusuf has engaged in a series of errant actions reminiscent of a hardened criminal’s record.
“This latest move of sacking five Emirs to install his ally was achieved by manipulating the Kano State House of Assembly, which he has turned into a rubber stamp, to endorse his illegal acts.
“They, along with Governor Yusuf, have taken their desperation to a level that could ignite the ancient city and cause widespread breaches.
“We are here today to appeal to President Tinubu to intervene in the Kano Emirate crisis,” Saleh said.
