FCCPC Shuts Down Chinese Supermarket in Abuja Over Discrimination Against Nigerians

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has closed a Chinese supermarket located in the China General Chamber of Commerce in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria. The closure followed an investigation into discriminatory practices against Nigerian customers.

FCCPC officials arrived at the premises on Monday to seal the supermarket after reports surfaced that it denied entry to Nigerians, allowing only Chinese nationals to shop there. This policy caused public outrage and prompted the commission’s swift action.

During the inspection, the FCCPC team interviewed Nigerian employees working at the supermarket. The facility manager, Shaibu Sanusi, explained that while Nigerians residing within the complex could shop there, those from outside were barred from entry.

When the FCCPC officials arrived at the supermarket, it was discovered that the owner, a Chinese woman named Cindy Liu Bei, had fled the premises with her family. The Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) footage confirmed that they left at 8:26 am on Monday, just before the FCCPC officials arrived.

Following these events, the FCCPC sealed the supermarket to prevent further discriminatory practices. This action sends a clear message against discrimination and reinforces the Commission’s commitment to protecting consumer rights.
