Ondo 2024: APC Governorship Primary Marred by Violence and Protests

Yesterday’s APC governorship primary in Ondo State was marred by protests, violence, and calls for cancellation by four aspirants who alleged compromise in the conduct of the exercise.

Sixteen aspirants participated in the direct mode primary, but Chief Olusola Oke, Hon Olugbenga Edema, Hon Wale Akinterinwa, and Prof Dayo Faduyile expressed dissatisfaction and urged the party leadership to annul the primary overseen by Governor Ahmed Ododo of Kogi State.

Violence erupted in several areas, including Okitipupa, Idanre, Akure, Supare, and Akoko South-West, with reports of political thugs disrupting the process and attacking voters.

Former councilor Hon Yinka Akosile was injured in Akure by suspected thugs, while election materials reportedly failed to reach Ile-Oluji/Okeigbo, leading to no voting in that area.

The primary election committee, however, maintained its commitment to a credible process, with Secretary Senator Ovie Omo-Agege emphasizing peaceful conduct and unity among aspirants.

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa expressed satisfaction with the exercise, highlighting his confidence in democratic principles and urging unity for Ondo’s development.
