Timeless Update reports that law enforcement in Abia State, southeastern Nigeria, have arrested a police officer who is accused of fatally shooting an entrepreneur in Aba, the state’s commercial center.
The victim, Emmanuel Okocha, was shot on Friday, allegedly for refusing to pay a bribe to a group of police officers.
Sources indicate that Okocha, who was from Abiriba in Ohafia Local Government Area, was killed by officers from the Rapid Response Squad despite having all his vehicle documents and a valid driver’s license.
The officers reportedly demanded a bribe from him, and upon his refusal, the tragic incident occurred.
Police Respond
In a statement released on Saturday, the Abia State police spokesperson, Maureen Chinaka, confirmed the arrest of the officer involved in the shooting. She identified the officer as Obagi Njok, a corporal with the Abayi Police Division. According to Chinaka, the officer is in custody and faces internal disciplinary procedures. Additionally, the police force has initiated administrative and legal processes to ensure appropriate consequences for the incident.
Chinaka assured the public that the family of the late Okocha and community leaders will be involved in the legal proceedings against the accused officer. She also expressed the police department’s regret over the incident and conveyed condolences to the victim’s family.
“The Abia State Police Command is committed to upholding professionalism and the rule of law. We strongly condemn any form of misconduct, unprofessionalism, or indiscipline among our officers,” Chinaka stated.
The police command has emphasized its dedication to restoring public trust and maintaining a high standard of conduct within the force.
