Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, based in Kaduna, has asserted that the security forces are aware of the whereabouts of the bandits causing havoc in Nigeria, particularly in the northern regions.
Gumi made these remarks during an interview on Nigeria Info FM, stating that security personnel accompanied him during negotiations with the bandits.
He emphasized the necessity for the federal government to engage in dialogue with the kidnappers responsible for the abduction of approximately 287 schoolchildren from Kuriga Government Secondary and LEA Primary Schools in Kaduna State’s Chikun Local Government Area. Gumi emphasized that negotiation is the most viable option to secure the safe release of the abducted pupils, clarifying that negotiation doesn’t necessarily entail monetary transactions but could involve prisoner releases.
Expanding on his stance, Gumi portrayed the bandits as disenfranchised individuals lacking access to education, infrastructure, and essential services.
Reiterating his longstanding advocacy, Gumi urged the government to extend amnesty to the bandits, similar to the approach employed in the Niger Delta region, to address the insecurity prevalent in the North.
Responding to inquiries about his ability to locate and engage with the bandits while security forces encounter difficulties, Gumi emphasized the importance of transparency among security personnel, noting that he always coordinates with them during negotiations.
“I don’t think they (security agents) are truthful with you. When I go, I go with them; I don’t go alone,” he remarked.
