Ghana Marks 67th Independence Day Anniversary

Ghana commemorates its 67th Independence Day today, March 6, 2024, marking a significant milestone since gaining freedom from British colonial rule in 1957.

Led by its inaugural President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana became the first sub-Saharan African nation to achieve independence after 83 years of British colonization.

Celebrations are underway nationwide and among Ghanaian communities abroad, with various activities planned throughout the month to honor the occasion.

This year’s national anniversary celebration will be held at the Youth Resource Centre in Koforidua, the capital of the Eastern Region.

In a move to showcase different regions and boost local economies, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo initiated a rotation system for the national independence celebration. The Eastern Region is hosting the event this year, following previous celebrations in the Central and Volta Regions.

Under the theme “Our Democracy, Our Pride,” the anniversary event will feature President Alassane Ouattara of Côte d’Ivoire as the Special Guest of Honour. Attendees include 120 ambassadors and high commissioners from various countries, as well as Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament and its 275 Members of Parliament.

The festivities will include a parade involving security services, students, pupils, and representatives from various groups and institutions, highlighting the nation’s unity and progress since attaining independence.
